Story retold in 'Chronicle of the Bible' by Derek Williams - This story was from Ephesus, c. AD 55-56 -
'Magicians here have watched their spells disappear in a pall of blue smoke in the certain knowledge that they will not be able to conjure them back again. The wizards claim that they have discovered a superior wisdom and even greater power which requires no trickery or incantations. But in order to avail themselves of it they first had to build a bonfire of books to destroy their old spells. According to local estimates, they sent material worth about 50,000 drachmas up in flames - enough to pay about 700 workers for a year.
In a city famous for treating people to tricks, the Christian preacher, Paul of Tarsus, has been doing wonders no one can explain by traditional means. A tent-maker by trade, even his aprons and cleaning cloths are said to have healing powers. He heals, exorcises demons and preaches in the name of Jesus Christ. He claims that the name of Christ, who was crucified over two decades ago but is said to have been raised from the dead, can heal people and bring them eternal forgiveness of their sins.
In one extraordinary scene, some Jewish exorcists of the Sceva family attempted to exorcise a demon in the name of Christ. The man they were trying to cure overpowered them and stripped them naked, claiming that he knew Paul and Jesus but not them. Local magicians realised that the power and name of Christ was to be respected as more than a mantra.'
